Description

The real-life vehicle represented by this miniature is the legendary Volkswagen Transporter T1 (popularly known as the "Bulli" or "Splittie" due to its split windshield).
Where and when was it manufactured?
• Production location: Assembly of the first generation of Volkswagen utility vehicles initially began in Wolfsburg, Germany (1950–1956). Due to immense demand, Volkswagen built a factory dedicated exclusively to commercial vehicles in Hanover, Germany, where this specific 1962 model was produced.
• Production period: The T1 generation was manufactured in Europe between 1950 and 1967, eventually being replaced by the T2 generation. The model replicated here features the technical improvements introduced in the early 1960s.
How was it used by German firefighters (Feuerwehr)?
The Volkswagen T1 was a cornerstone of the post-war modernization of German fire brigades (both professional and volunteer—*Freiwillige Feuerwehr*), serving particularly in small communities or as a rapid-response support vehicle in cities. Its primary roles were:
1. TSF (*Tragkraftspritzenfahrzeug*) – Portable pump transport vehicle:
• This was the most common application. The van did not contain a large water tank; instead, the interior space was specially configured to carry a portable motor-driven pump (typically a Ziegler or Magirus unit, itself powered by a VW Beetle engine). • Firefighters would manually unload the pump and set it up near a fixed water source (river, lake, or hydrant), while the vehicle transported the rest of the equipment.
2. Personnel and secondary equipment transport:
• The vehicle carried a standard team consisting of an attack squad of 6 or 9 firefighters (including the commander).
• It was also equipped with pressure hoses (Type B and C), axes, gas masks, portable fire extinguishers, and telescopic ladders mounted on the roof rack.
3. Einsatzleitung (Command and control vehicle):
• Certain T1 models featuring extra windows or canvas sunroofs (such as the "Samba" variant shown in the image) served as mobile field command posts, equipped with two-way radios for crew coordination.
The model bears the coat of arms of the city of Ingolstadt (Bavaria) on the door. In that region, VW T1 vans were highly valued for their air-cooled 1.2L or 1.5L engines, which started instantly in winter and avoided issues with antifreeze freezing during long shifts on standby.
